King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz died in the early hours of Friday, January 23rd following hospitalization in Riyadh for pneumonia. The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques is succeeded by Salman bin Abdulaziz who served as Crown Prince and Deputy Prime Minister. SUSRIS will chronicle the developments in the transition of leadership and in providing background and context on the personalities and the consequences of the changes.

Six Royal Decrees, Royal Statement Issued

Riyadh, Rabi’II 3, 1436, Jan 23, 2015, SPA — Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud has chosen Prince Mohammed bin Naif bin Abdulaziz Al Saud as the Deputy Crown Prince and has appointed him as the Second Deputy Premier and Minister of Interior.

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud issued a royal decree appointing Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud as the Minister of Defense in addition to his current position.

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud issued a royal decree regarding continuation of all current members of the Cabinet in their positions under King Salman’s chairmanship.

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud issued a royal decree appointing Crown Prince Muqrin bin Abdulaziz Al Saud as the Deputy Premier.

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud issued a royal decree relieving Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Chief of the Crown Prince’s Court and Advisor to the Crown Prince, of his position in addition to his continuation as the Minister of the State and Member of the Cabinet at the rank of the minister.

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud issued a royal decree relieving Khalid bin Abdulaziz Al-Tuwaijri, Chief of the Royal Court and Private Secretary of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, of his position.

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud issued a royal decree appointing Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud as the Chief of the Royal Court and Private Advisor of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques at the rank of the minister in addition to his current position.

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud has ordered the Chief of the Royal Court to submit his nominations for leading positions at the Royal Court.

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud issued a royal decree relieving Khalid bin Abdulaziz Al-Tuwaijri, Chief of the Royal Guard, of his position, assigning General Hamad bin Mohammed Al-Ohali to act as the Chief of the Royal Guard.

The Royal Court issued the following statement:

‘Based on choosing Prince Mohammed bin Naif bin Abdulaziz Al Saud as the Deputy Crown Prince, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud called to give the Pledge of Allegiance to Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Naif bin Abdulaziz Al Saud during the Pledge of Allegiance to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and Crown Prince at Governance Palace in Riyadh after Isha prayers of this day, Friday, 03/04/1436H.’
