Editor’s Note:

The SUSRIS Resource section includes a variety of reference material such as timelines, experts and officials directories, documents, books, and a glossary. In addition SUSRIS maintains “Special Sections” that provide a compilation of SUSRIS articles and interviews along with reference materials and media reports on specific topics. Among these is a collection of reference material providing background for the current developments regarding the Islamic State (a.k.a. IS, ISIL, Daesh). The “Special Sections” are constantly updated as new materials become available so we suggest you bookmark those of interest to you and check back periodically.

We present for your consideration several items to provide background and context on the U.S., Saudi and coalition efforts to combat Daesh.  These include the joint statement with a roster of coalition partnersSecretary Kerry’s remarks following the anti-Daesh ministerial meeting (text and video)a report on Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al Faisal’s remarks from Brussels and the latest edition of the SUSRIS Special Section: “The Islamic State.”

This SUSRIS Special Section provides resources for context and background on the Islamic State, which emerged in 2014 as a potent military force that gobbled up wide swaths of territory in Iraq and Syria and demonstrated unprecedented barbarity against its opponents and innocent populations.

The Islamic State has galvanized the United States, its allies and even its adversaries in a common pool of nations that are threatened by the Islamic State’s rapid growth, militant ideology, and potent threat to regional and security.

SUSRIS has compiled articles, interviews, special reports, videos, and other resources here to provide background, context, analyses and reference material on this important topic. We welcome your feedback on how we can improve this section.

Note: The Islamic State is variously referred to as “ISIS”, “ISIL” and “Da’ish”]
